5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins:
5-Hydroxy Tryptophan or 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins is a forerunner to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which transfers nerve impulses from one cell to another and regulates several vital processes in the body, including sleep, emotional stability, pain sensitivity and addictive cravings. Unlike serotonin alone, 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins can cross the blood-brain barrier.5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins has attracted a good deal of attention lately because of its ability to increase pain tolerance, induce sleep, and affect how hunger is perceived.Health Benefits Promising research indicates that 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins may have a beneficial effect on a broad scope of complaints. 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins has also been found to be useful for a number of other disorders.

5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins may help to:
Elevate mood in cases of depression,
anxiety, and panic attacks. 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins appears to increase the brain’s serotonin levels, positively influencing such disorders as depression that have been linked to low levels of this brain neurotransmitter. A number of small European studies offer examples of people with depression who found little relief from traditional antidepressant drugs yet obtained good results with 5-HTP.

Treat insomnia.
Several elements of a good night’s sleep appear to be influenced by 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins. In addition to reducing the amount of time it takes to nod off, this compound actually may enhance the quality of sleep itself, increasing both the duration of dream states (REM sleep) and of deep slumber.

In studies, most people who tried 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins also reported feeling more rested upon awakening.

* Promote weight loss. Some studies indicate that 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins may curb the appetite when taken before meals. In a recent study of dieting women, those given 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins reported feeling fuller than those who were given a placebo. In the end, participants in the 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins group consumed fewer calories overall, and lost more weight than those in the placebo group. Another study reported increased weight loss among obese patients who took 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins versus those who were given a placebo; all, however, had been restricted to a daily diet of 1,200 calories. In addition, because 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins reportedly reduces cravings for sweets and starches, it may also be of use in helping diabetics adhere to a healthy diet.

* Ease migraine pain. Migraine headaches have been linked to low serotonin levels. Studies are ongoing to determine if 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins, which may boost the brain’s serotonin levels, can help to reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of this extremely painful type of headache.

* Increase tolerance to the pain of fibromyalgia. People who suffer from fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that commonly causes muscle pain and disabling fatigue, may have low serotonin levels. By increasing the level of these neurochemicals, 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins may improve pain tolerance. In a recent Italian study, the 200 fibromylagia sufferers who added 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins to a regimen of conventional antidepressants experienced less pain than those who took the drugs or 5-Htp by Solaray Vitamins alone.

If you love fresh spaghetti sauce or pesto, than you’ve just got to have fresh basil and other herbs all year round! Sure, a nice 1 X 4 window garden getting at least 4 or 5 hours of direct light from a sunny window will give you something to pinch here and there. Gardens with mint, rosemary, bay leaf, savory, oregano, chervil, sand thyme are some of the easiest to grow this way.

But what if you need your basil…and lots of it? Basil and cilantro need just a bit more light, and really prefer 8 hours or more of direct light each day. In addition to this if you want fresh pesto, just a pinch here and there is not going to cut it. Here’s what you can do about it.

The goal is a vegatative light cycle (18 hours on), with eight or more direct sun or bright artificial light.

Whenever the light levels are low, give them a boost. Two or three fluorescent lights above your plants will greatly increase their growth and yield. You can grow enough basil for a few servings of pesto now and then, and still have enough always at your fingertips.

Or, with a small metal halide light you would have a larger area with better lighting. You could surely produce an abundance of any herbs you choose for your culinary and aromatic delights. Basil would take well to the bright conditions under a metal halide, as it is a Mediterranean, sun loving herb.

It has been said that some herbs grow better, or should be grown in, poor soil. The oils in herbs make them special. Very fast growing herbs often grow plain leaves and stems more quickly than they can produce tasty essential oils. Often you will hear “basil grows better in poor soil” or “your basil will taste better if you don’t fertalize”. What these people really mean is “don’t grow your basil too fast” (sorry to pick on basil).

When growing in a container, it is a little different. The plant still needs some food to grow, and when that food runs out you will need to fertalize. However, as you will see in the next two sections, this is all taken into consideration together with the growth habbits of your herbs.

To keep initial growth rates in control, I use a soil mix with just enough nutrients. Mix 2 parts sphagnum peat to 1 part perlite, and than add 20 percent worm castings. Adjust the Ph of any mix using sphagnum peat moss by adding 2 teaspoons of hydrated lime for every gallon of soil mix. or You can substitute peat with coconut coir or vermiculite, which do not need Ph adjusting. Finally, I add 1 tablespoon of kelp meal for each gallon of soil to add plant hormones and to give beneficial micro-orgnisms something to feed on. Use this mix whenever you transplant.

If you feel the top of the soil and it is dry, than you need to water. Another way is to pick up the container and check how heavy it is. Your herbs like their soil to drain fast. You need to have containers with holes in the bottom, and you need to add an inch or so of perlite or gravel to the bottom of each container as you transplant. It is best to water thoroughly, but less often. Water the container until some water comes out the bottom.

When the herbs have been in any container for ten days or more, you need to begin feeding them. In a container, the roots are stuck in a small space and quickly mine it free of any nutrients, especially if you were going easy on the nutrients to begin with. Feed with half strength nutrient such as Maxsea 16-16-16 every two weeks.

If you really want to keep your plants healthy, I also recommend 10 ml/gallon Thrive Alive B1 and Maxicrop liquid seaweed in every drop of water you give to your plants. The B1 is vitamins and root hormones, and the seaweed is trace nutrients and plant growth hormones. This will help with essetial oil production. Finally, water basil from around the base…it does not like water on its leaves.

As soon as the herbs have grown enough leaves to be pinched without affecting their growth, you can begin using some of the herbs. This is usually about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the herbs. Herbs like basil are best when harvested before flowers open. You will get your highest essetial oil levels when you harvest at the end of the dark period, assuming you do not leave the lights on 24 hours a day.

There are 13 different types of vitamins that have been identified, that are necessary for our body’s well being and health. Each of them has a specific function, and a deficiency in any one can cause a health problem or a dysfunction of a body part or organ.

Vitamin A: Also known as retinol because it generates the pigments necessary for the proper functioning of the retina, Vitamin A aids in the formation of healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes and the skin; it is also required for reproduction and breastfeeding and for good vision. A deficiency in Vitamin A can lead to night blindness, excessively dry skin and even dryness of the eyes. The body can obtain vitamin A from carotene, a vitamin antecedent found in vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, and broccoli among others. Our body can also absorb ready made vitamin A from plant eating animals. Some of these sources are milk, butter, egg yolk.

Vitamin B: These are water soluble vitamins and are together called vitamin B complex. They are considered extremely important for the break down of carbohydrates into energy. They are also important for the formation of red blood cells, regulation of the healthy functioning of the heart and nerve cells, absorption of proteins and synthesis of hormones and cholesterol. Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Cobalamin, Folate, Panthothenic acid and Biotin are all different types of vitamin B.

Vitamin C: Also called ascorbic acid plays an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. It also aids in the absorption of iron and is important for the formation and maintenance of collagen, the connective tissue that supports many body structures. It also promotes healing as it is an antioxidant. A deficiency of vitamin C can cause scurvy. Although it is widely believed that vitamin C prevents colds and flu, these claims have not been collaborated under scientific conditions. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, fresh strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, and guava and vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, spinach, kale, green peppers, cabbage, and turnips.

Vitamin D: Also known as the ’sunshine vitamin’, our bodies are able to produce this vitamin by exposure to sunshine. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and is thus essential for bone formation and for healthy teeth. A deficiency of vitamin D can cause rickets, which is a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.deformity of the rib cage, skull and bones of the leg. Sources of vitamin D include egg yolk, tuna, dairy products like cheese, butter, margarine, cream, fortified milk and also cereals.

Vitamin E: This vitamin is known to play a role in the formation of red blood cells although its entire function in the human body is still not fully known. It is also known to be an antioxidant. Sources of vitamin E are wheat germ, olives, corn, nuts vegetable oils, liver, and leafy green vegetables.

Vitamin K: This vitamin is vital for the coagulation of blood. Vitamin K is found in alfalfa, liver, cabbage, cauliflower and cereals. The bacteria in our intestines also produces vitamin K.

Are you in love with lavender? If so, you’re not alone, as lavender has become the most popular aromatic herb. In fact, in 1999, the “queen of herbs” was named as the “year of lavender!”

As one of the most loved aromatic herbs, lavender has been cultivated and used throughout the centuries. In ancient times, the Egyptians used lavender in incense and perfume and it was even used in the mummification process. The Arabs, Greeks and Romans used lavender as an offering to their gods.

Because of its tendency to render a better quality essential oil, true lavender — which is found in the French and Mediterranean Alps, growing in altitudes of 6,000 feet — is considered to be the most effective of these aromatic herbs.

Common Uses Of Lavender

As an essential oil in today’s society, lavender is used, both internally and topically, for a number of conditions:

- Aromatic (a most popular fragrance) - carminative (to relieve flatulence) - antibacterial - antiseptic - nervine (to calm the nerves) - expectorant - stimulant - cosmetic - antispasmodic.

It has also been used to prevent some childhood infections and to soothe temper tantrums in children. The most common uses of lavender are to: treat burns (from minor to scalding), eczema, grazes, cuts, inflammation, dermatitis, headaches, migraines, fainting, nausea, insomnia, bacterial infections, boils, acne, arthritis and rheumatism. As a germicidal agent, lavender oil is non-toxic.

It contains linalool and linalool acetate which play important roles in the healing process.

Calming Effect Of Lavender

Both humans and animals, when inhaling lavender, experience a sedative effect that closely favors the calming effect of the geranium and peppermint plants. This is probably the reason why these aromatic herbs are favored for a variety of uses from treating depression and sleep disorders to treating premenstrual syndrome.

Lavender beauty and bath products, to be used for external purposes only, are often available in gift baskets. A wonderful gift for any occasion, lavender is sure to be appreciated by all who receive it. In addition to its use in aromatherapy products and treatments, lavender may be used to specifically treat depression.

The Gift Of Lavender

Lavender is a popular gift item that can be purchased separately or in a gift basket. Most of the aromatherapy gifts are made with essential oil and dried lavender buds. Examples of these are bar soap, bath bomb fizzers, bath crystals, bath oil beads, closet or drawer sachets, hand and body lotions, sleep pillows and soothing herbal sea salts. Beauty products that contain lavender range from body sprays and hair care products to a variety of skin care products. All of the above products mentioned are used for the sole purpose of creating a sense of peace and to promote relaxation.

Lavender Trivia

Did you know that lavender is also used in home cleaning products?

Throughout history, lavender has found its way into the homes of many historical figures. Queen Victoria insisted that her furniture and floors be cleaned with lavender to freshen up the rooms in her castle. Queen Elizabeth I of England enjoyed drinking lavender tea as a way to relieve her migraines and other maladies. During World War I, nurses treated injured soldiers by washing their wounds with an antiseptic wash that contained lavender.

Cooking With Lavender

Lavender is an amazingly versatile herb that is also used for cooking — not only at home, but also in many upscale restaurants. A member of the mint family, lavender flowers are wonderful flavor enhancers that can also add to the appearance of the food. Lavender flowers and leaves can be used freshly cut; their buds and stems can be dried before use.

It is best to use lavender with other herbs, such as fennel, oregano and savory, and it can also be used with its other mint cousins (rosemary, sage and thyme). Lavender has an extremely powerful aroma, so it must be used sparingly or the recipe will have a bitter taste, and you’ll feel like you are eating perfume. The next time you’re cooking up a storm, add a sprig of lavender to the pot and enjoy!

Does this describe you: You walk into the living room to get
something, only to get there and forget what you needed? You
often hear Yes, you already told me about that or maybe you
thought you told someone, but you never actually verbalized it.
Someone tells you their name and then ninety seconds later you
say, Ok, tell me your name again.

Perhaps youre not as young as you used to be, you have more on
your plate to keep track of or you have a diagnosed or even
undiagnosed medical condition. Whatever the reason, you seem to
be plagued with a bad case CRS Cant Remember Squat. First and
foremost if you havent had a physical exam in a while, go see
your doctor. Youll want to rule out anything serious that may
be causing your CRS. Barring any serious findings, you can take
some herbs, vitamins and other supplements to help regain some of
your memory. The vitamins, herbs and supplements listed below
may help.

Essential Fatty Acids, otherwise known as fish oils or EPA-DHA
are well known for their anti-inflammatory activity. Furthermore,
DHA is required for normal brain function in adults. Decreases in
brain DHA content are associated with age-related cognitive
decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies suggest that Polyphenol found in the skins of red grapes
and various other plants may protect against inflammation and
cognitive disorders.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is also an excellent antioxidant agent in
neurodegenerative diseases due to the fact that it can interrupt
free radical damage at several points. It has been shown to
elevate antioxidants in various brain regions and improves
memory. Further, ALA supports healthy blood glucose levels and
insulin activity.

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant cofactor that has been shown to
protect the brain. In addition to being a potent free radical
scavenger, CoQ10 has proven to be effective in a wide variety of
age-related conditions.

Vitamin E is the primary antioxidant found in all tissues. Low
vitamin E levels are consistently associated with an increased
risk and occurrence of neurological diseases, including
Alzheimers and Parkinsons. In a study of patients with
Alzheimers, treatment with 2000 IU of vitamin E per day for 2
years was beneficial in delaying the primary outcome (time to the
occurrence of death, institutionalization, loss of ability to
perform activities of daily living, and severe dementia) of
disease progression.

Ginkgo biloba extract is an approved treatment for dementia in
Germany, and it is the only nonprescription substance considered
a treatment for dementia in Canada. Ginkgo biloba is one extract
readily available. It enhances mental efficiency in elderly
patients with mild to moderate memory impairment. It is also
shown to improve cognitive function in patients with dementia, to
enhance blood flow to the brain, enhances cognitive performance
in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Further it is said to
enhance memory in young individuals.

Adaptogenic herbs have been shown to reduce the negative effects
of stress. Due to the decreased ability to handle stress and the
increased levels of glucocorticoids associated with aging and
neurodegeneration, herbs with adaptogenic properties may be
beneficial. Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, holy basil, and
brahmi have a positive influence on stress response, mental
function, and cognition.

Carotenoids are a class of naturally occurring plant pigments
that provide the bright red, orange, and yellow colors of fruits
and vegetables. A balanced intake of mixed carotenoids, as found
in a healthy diet, provides the best protection against oxidative
damage.

Folate and vitamins B6 and B12 are needed for proper brain
function. Insufficiencies of these nutrients may result in
forgetfulness, memory loss, confusion, depression, dementia, and
mood and sensory changes. One study stated that age-related
impairment of cognitive function is likely related to vitamin
deficiencies, and is “preventable or reversible with improved
vitamins, especially vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate.”

Additionally, scientists searching for a cure for Alzheimer’s
disease have found a potential ally in the herb sage. Checking
the writings of herbalists working four centuries ago, scientists
in England found a marked improvement in the memory capabilities
of Alzheimers patients who took sage oil extract. The finding
was consistent with a discovery by researchers at the
Universities’ Medicinal Plant Research Center that sage protects
a key chemical destroyed in Alzheimer’s.

This list is not all inclusive and there could be a number of
other factors (environment, diet, disease) that could be the root
cause of your CRS. However, starting with a few supplements may
help you remember where you left your car keys!

A balanced diet should be composed of a variety of raw vegetables. Emphasizing the fact that the vegetables should be organic or the best of what is available. A variety of vegetables assure the proper enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

Juices are the best way to reach the full amount of enzymes, vitamins and minerals for the body’s daily uses. Enzymes are the key elements of nourishment to the body. The enzymes enable the body to digest food and absorb it into the blood. For example, some enzymes break down the protein, carbohydrate and fat molecules of foods into smaller molecules; others assist in passing these molecules from the intestines to the bloodstream and yet, there are others using the molecules to build structures of cellular constituents. The enzymes are in the seeds, the sprouting part of the plant.

Replenishment is the law of life; if we do not eat we die. Eating the wrong foods and not replenishing enzymes, vitamins and minerals shorten life and one could suffer along the way. There are some diseases, such as albinism, lack of normal pigmentation in the skin and hair of a person, animal or coloration of a plant, result from an enzyme deficiency. It is necessary to use a trustworthy supplement to replenish enzymes and nutrients.

Without knowing how fresh-raw vegetables and fruit juices work in the body, one would think why not eat the vegetables and fruits instead of juicing. Solid foods require digesting and with juices, the body will not need to digest. Nourishment gets to the cells and body tissues quickly.

There is no nourishment in fiber. Eating solid foods cause the body hours to process. Extracting juice and setting the fiber aside for later use, the body can receive nourishment immediately and generate energy. Enzymes are responsible for storage and release of energy.

Fiber is required even though there are no nutrients, when eaten, raw the fiber acts as a broom in the intestines, sweeping it clean. When food is cooked, fiber acts as a mop swabbing the intestines leaving residue causing a build up. The colon becomes sluggish, constipation, inflammation of colon, and other disturbances can occur.

Before starting, different food regiments consult a health care professional. Juicing vegetables and fruits gives the body an avenue to digest and assimilate nutritional enzymes. The digestive system uses little energy because juice requires minimum digestion, saving energy. After a large meal, the body slows down, because the energy is used to process the meal.

Raw vegetable juices are necessary as a supplement to every diet. A raw food regiment without sufficient quantity and variety can be equally deficient as cooked foods. A fresh raw variety of organic vegetables supply the body with amino acids, minerals, salts, enzymes, and vitamins. The quality of vegetables has a bearing on the results.

The philosophy behind tincture is to capture the spiritual and physical essence of the plant. This is done by using the power of ethyl alcohol to dissolve and preserve the herb in question.

The substance used to extract the herbs is known as the menstrum. The herbs you are tincturing are known as the mark. Tincturing will extract and preserve both the water-soluble and alcohol-soluble properties of an herb.

In the interest of taking a more involved stance in their health, many people are turning to homemade tinctures made from fresh or dried herbs. Tinctures have proven to be more powerful and longer lasting than dried herbs. Dried herbs can get moldy or be eaten by insects, tinctures do not. Tinctures will keep up to two years and keep their potency if stored properly. Making your own tinctures will save you quite a bit of money. If you purchase tinctures in a retail store you will get a few ounces whereas if you make it yourself it will yield about a quart.

When purchasing herbs, make sure you are buying from a reputable source. Better yet, grow your own herbs to be sure of the highest possible quality. When growing your own you can make any number of combinations to make up your tinctures. I have also found that when growing my own herbs I get the most enjoyment, knowing not only did I make the tincture but I grew the herbs. I become part of the process from beginning to end.

There are several items that you will need to make your own tinctures. First you need either powdered herbs or fresh cut herbs. Vodka, brandy or rum, 80-100 proof to cover the herbs. Mason jars with lids. Muslin or Cheesecloth that is unbleached. Lastly, labels for the jars.

You will need 7-10 ounces of chopped fresh herbs for every quart of vodka, brandy or rum. I prefer to use fresh herbs when making my tinctures. When using powdered herbs, I use 4 ounces of herbs to one pint of liquid. If you are making a tincture from bitter herbs it is best to use rum as it will mask the taste of the herbs. To make a non-alcoholic tincture use distilled water, glycerol or vinegar. Keep in mind that if you use vinegar the tincture will have to be refrigerated.

Put your herbs in the mason jars and then pour the liquid over them so that it comes up to about an inch above the herbs. Seal tightly and label the jars then put them in a very dark, warm area. Keeping them in a paper bag has worked well for me. You will have to shake the jar everyday, several times a day if you can mange it.

At first check the solution daily to make sure the vodka, brandy or rum still covers the herbs. Let the mixture steep for at least two weeks and up to three months. When you reach the allotted waiting period, line a sieve with the cheesecloth or muslin and pour the liquid thru the sieve into another bottle. Gather up the ends of the cheesecloth and squeeze to extract all of the liquid. You can now fill small bottles with droppers with the tincture for ease in use. Be sure to label the jar with the name and the date.

The dose is one teaspoon tincture in a cup of tea, juice or water taken three times daily.

There are no right formulas for making tinctures. Experiment with different combinations. Be sure you write down the formula so when you come up with a winning combination you will have it on file.

Here are a few ideas for treating colds. Make tinctures from the following herbs: * echinacea (leaves, flowers) * elder (leaves, flowers, berries) * eyebright (leaves, flowers) * ginger (root) * peppermint (leaves) * yarrow (leaves, flowers) * catnip (leaves

>

If I could pronounce it right, I would call cholesterol onomatopoeic. It’s a word that, to me at least, conjures up clogged arteries, fried foods and early death. I probably stand alone on this but when I pronounce it, it sounds like the passage of congealed plaque working its way down your arterial routes. Definitely not pretty, and actually not very fair if you look at the facts about cholesterol.

Cholesterol is an entirely natural substance, produced in the human body and other mammals that is a constituent of cell membranes and a precursor to other important proteins. It is the body’s method of transporting and processing cholesterol that is thought to be the problem. I say “thought to be”, because some studies have contradicted other studies when it comes to defining what the correlations with heart disease are. Complex proteins called low density lipoproteins (LDL’s) transport the cholesterol from the liver, where it is produced or processed around the bloodstream to where it is needed, which includes the cell walls. High density lipoproteins (HDL’s) carry the cholesterol back to the liver, where it is processed for excretion, which is thought to be the best direction for the stuff. The main thing to remember is that it is not cholesterol that you should be worried about, it is heart attacks.

Cholesterol used to be a generally demonized term until the idea of “good and bad” came about. Back then, the majority of people were not too sure what this substance was. All we knew was that it was present in cheeseburgers, it was very bad for us and it was probably planted by communists. Then scientists started discussing LDL/HDL ratios and reduction pathways and people started to think that maybe these were good molecules after all, and that maybe they just needed to learn the error of their ways.

The media has done these misconceptions no favors and it has driven us into a frenzy over good cholesterol, bad cholesterol and functional foods. The fact of the matter is that, as always, there is no quick answer and no easy way. If all we needed to do was to eat some margarine that was high in good cholesterol then we would be laughing all the way to the buffet. Cholesterol is just one of the risk factors in cardiovascular disease. Exercise, weight and a healthy lifestyle are the other essential factors. Stop smoking and drinking excessively and get fit. Obvious advice? Yes, and don’t say you didn’t know it already.

Of course it is always easier to take a pill than go jogging and there are some interesting drugs on the market today, with their attendant risks. There are also some other simple ways to lower your risk of heart attacks, by just eating well.

Vitamin C alongside its multitude of health benefits is a reduction in cardiovascular risk. Citrus fruits, many vegetables.

Pantothenic Acid available in eggs, milk, fish, whole grain cereals, broccoli.

Red Yeast Rice used in traditional Chinese medicine for years and is produced by fermenting with a particular yeast. This is what makes the Chinese dish Peking duck red and it is thought to reduce LDL levels. However I am sure cardiovascular surgeons would not recommend this high fat dish too many times a week. Soy Isoflavones, Garlic and Gugul all help to lower total cholesterol and help the HDL, LDL ratio (a good thing).

CoQ10, Ester C and Vitamin E are a group of powerful antioxidants that prevent dangerous oxidation of cholesterol that can damage the arterial walls and encourage the buildup of plaque.

If you want to find which foods are harboring these nutrients - check the National Institute of Health’s Encyclopedia.

These are all also available in supplement form in health stores or online. Before you take anything, be sure to check for interaction with your medication first. Click to check your drugs for interaction with your vitamins.

(NC)-With all the different types of vitamin and mineral supplements available on the local pharmacy shelf, it can be confusing to determine what you really need. Sometimes a doctor or registered dietitian will make the decision easier by recommending what supplement to take, how much and how often. Often, you hear through friends or read about the benefits of certain vitamins or minerals and wonder if you could benefit from one, two, or possibly more types of supplements.

However, choosing supplements is not as simple or as safe as choosing other pharmacy products, such as toothpaste or deodorant. Consuming large amounts of any supplement, without medical advice, may be harmful.

If you are considering purchasing individual supplements, you should be aware that high doses of vitamins and minerals can interfere with both the action of medication and the absorption of other nutrients. In fact, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D and E) are stored in the body and have the potential to accumulate to harmful levels if consumed in excessive doses. It is important to read supplement labels carefully and only take them as directed on the label. In addition, you should be aware of your total nutrient intake if you are taking more than one supplement product a day. But tracking nutrient intake can become difficult when taking a number of single supplements.

Taking a daily multivitamin is a sensible and convenient choice if you are concerned about supplement safety issues. Multivitamins offer a balance of nutrients which maximizes the effectiveness of each ingredient. They provide responsible levels of all vitamins and minerals, which fall below recognized upper limits. Multivitamins are formulated to complement diet and maintain a consistent level of nutrients required by the body. Their careful combination of ingredients provides optimal absorption and maximum benefits. A well-balanced, daily multivitamin such as Centrum that doesn’t contain too much of any single nutrient is a safe and convenient choice.
